Hi there,
“Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.” – J. Nozipo Maraire
To own and tell our stories is so powerful. Before taking my first Campfire class, it wasn’t that I was awful at storytelling, but growing up as an introvert in an immigrant family where my parents spoke a different language made it so that the stories I told were few and far between.
Because of this, I often get insecure when someone asks me how I’m doing, what I did over a trip, or what I do, because I haven’t known how to really talk about it and tell those stories. Learning Campfire’s principles of what makes a good story, to recall my stories, and practicing telling them in the class made me more confident with my own voice. Storytelling also connected each of us in class – after every class I would think, “I am so proud and so lucky to work at a place that does important work like this.” We don’t just teach people how to tell stories, we’re turning people – including myself! – into lions with the power to own their own narratives.
It can be scary to try something new – but trust me, it’s worth it Campfire is such a supportive space to learn, so I hope you’ll consider our upcoming classes here. I’m looking forward to taking my next class!
The rest of the 2024 schedule has just been posted – Chapter 1 starting April 30th still has 1 spot, and there will be one session of Chapter 1 starting August 24th and Chapter 2 starting October 19th.
Warm regards,
Jessica
